Parque Natural de Corralejo

Corralejo Natural Park is by far the best place to go to enjoy the desert beauty of Fuerteventura and some say the whole of the Canary Islands. This protected coastal zone measures 2.5 by 10.5 kilometres and is located in the north-east of the island just outside of Corralejo town. It is easily accessible on foot, bike and public transport, some hotels even offer a shuttle bus service to and from the area.

Its not an easy thing to miss, you will have already passed through the natural park in your transfer from the airport, the almost instantaneous change in landscape is breathtaking. To the north of the park an enormous extension of white sands bathed by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. To the south, the opposite awaits: a volcanic landscape, red and ochre, dramatic and rugged.

The main FV-1 road, which connects the island capital Puerto del Rosario to the town of Corralejo, passes through the national park, you will however need to park up and explore by foot, this is the only way to take it all in. Be sure to bring a towel, drinking water, sun cream and a bathing suit with you (unless you are a fan of nude sunbathing) and keep an eye on those water safety flags. To really immerse yourself in the volcanic landscape though you’ll need to bring your walking boots to climb the 300 metres or so up the Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) volcano and make sure you pack your camera to take those incredible shots of Lanzarote and La Graciosa across the water and to immortalise the experience. Enjoy!
